Steamed Clams!

(download)

I made some steamed clams and roasted asparagus to go along with our margaritas. I've steamed mussels numerous times, but this was the first time I've done clams. A little butter, onions, garlic, white wine, lemon juice and that's it! It really doesn't get much easier.

Coffee Tasting @ Muddy Dog Roasting Co.

(download)

So, the other day Kim, my sister-in-law, asked if we'd be interested in checking out this place called Muddy Dog Roasting Co.  I was a little confused.  First, I was fairly positive that Kim didn't drink coffee.  And second, coffee roaster -- what the hell is that?  I wasn't really sure if it was a kid-friendly place or what, but it sounded interesting and worth checking out.

As you can see from the pictures and this panorama, it was not a coffee shop.  It was a coffee roaster, basically they imported, processed (roasted), and distributed coffee.  Fortunately for us, they occasionally did these "tastings" to spread awareness of their business and I guess broaden people's coffee palate.  We hung out for about an hour while Jim, the part-owner with his wife (whose name I can't remember), brewed up several different batches of both teas and coffee.  The coffees were from all over the world; Costa Rica, India, Nicaragua, etc.  With each different coffee, he told us all about the different harvesting and processing... umm...  processes.  Heh, he also went on about the various flavors in each brew.  Fruity this.  Lemony that.  All I know is, it was some damn good coffee.

I was worried about how the boys would do there, but Jim and his wife were very accommodating.  They supplied the boys with paper and markers which kept them sufficiently entertained until we were ready to go.

I went in not knowing what to expect, and came out carrying a bag of several coffees and tea.  It was a nice way to spend a Saturday morning.

RubyConf in New Orleans

(download)

So I just got back from spending 4 days in New Orleans for RubyConf, a software development conference.

Three of my coworkers were also there, two of which were actually speaking at the event. We attended sessions on various aspects of Ruby development, but we also took every chance we had to get out and explore the area.

I spent several years as a child in New Orleans, but having moved away over twenty years ago, it was really nice to go back. The city has so much charm that I wasn't able to appreciate at such a young age.

I did most of my exploring with my buddy Pradeep, a fellow Intridean. We just wandered the streets (bourbon, royal, julia, magazine), stopping for anything interesting like food, art galleries, or drinks! We did beignets and coffee at Cafe Du Monde, a three course lunch at Brennan's, Sazerac at the Roosevelt, and liver mousse and porkbelly at Feast.

There's a ton to see and do in New Orleans and I can't wait to go back. Hopefully next time it'll be with Amy instead of my coworkers.

My Weekend In Atlanta

(download)

I went to Atlanta this past weekend to hang out with Brendan and one of our friend/coworkers Adam Bair. Adam flew down from Maine, and I of course drove down from NC. We had a pretty good time hangin' out, playing pool, go-karting, and stuffing our faces. I can't wait to do it again. And maybe next time we'll bring our other halves with us...

R2D2 Cake, The Making of

I set up our little point-n-shoot camera to take time-lapse video while I was making Cameron's R2D2 birthday cake.

Everyone that saw the cake told me how awesome the cake was, or how they really liked it, but mostly people were interested in how I did it.  That led me to take the time-lapse footage and throw together this little video.

Enjoy.

Making Amy's Birthday Cake

(download)

(download)

Today was Amy's 28th birthday, so I baked her a cake, as I usually do when its someone's b-day.  I wanted to make something new, so I decided on a Pineapple Upside-down Cake.  I was pretty busy at work today, so I was in a bit of a hurry while baking it.  Not only did I only buy one can of sliced pineapple instead of two when I was at the store, but when I was making the cake I totally forgot to add the crushed pineapple to the bottom layer, but it wasn't really a problem.

When I was placing the sliced pineapple for the top layer, I cut and arranged them to say "28", but after it was done you couldn't really tell without looking very closely.  Oh well, it still tasted delicious and it was nice to have a cake that wasn't slathered in frosting for once.

Cooked up some seafood

(download)

Amy was craving seafood the other night, so I whipped up this dinner. It's not every day that I cook lobster, so I thought I'd snap a few pictures and share.
